A Subtle Love

"You've said that love is devoid of emotion. But I do feel love. I can't imagine life without feeling love," she said. "Yes," replied the Sage, "you have what you call feeling love. Such feeling arises within love. Love is the spaciousness in which loving feelings arise. These are to be welcomed as passing feelings; they are to be cherished as a grace - neither sought nor clung to. But if love were a feeling, it could come and go. Love doesn't come and go."

Lovers undress
to make love ~
so the soul

May 2019 -

Sitting in the circle of Silence with others this past Sunday in the Quaker Meeting, what arose through the Silence was how I never cease being amazed at the Love that manifests in Quiet together. Observing this thought, I questioned what this really referred to, this Love. Afterward, I realized this Love arising in the Silence is not an emotive experience. If we speak of love as an emotional feeling, then, this Love would not be what we speak of. This Love is not some romantic feeling, and it is not the romantic devotionalism which is a valid expression in much religion. The Love which spoke to my heart during the Quiet, which keeps amazing me, is too subtle, so too intimate, to be an emotion. We could say this Love is a feeling before feeling or, simply, this Love is Christ. Yet, in dropping the words, the intellectualization about It, we are more likely to be able to relax, being undressed more of self and entering a more subtle intimacy with Life.

even the thought of Love
is separation from Love
let Love unclothe you of this thought
for Love to give you totally
to Love

I invite you to pose to yourself the following questions - rather than seeking an answer, waiting in the Silence to receive an answer -

Have you sensed a Love present so subtle that while loving, it could not be called an emotion? Do you, in the Silence, sense a subtle Love that you do not generally outside the Silence? Are there ways you could be more receptive to this Love inside and outside times set aside for Quiet?
